MCC Men’s Wrestling Competes at Home Open, Crowns Two Champions.
MUSKEGON, MI – November 3, 2025 – The No. 6 nationally-ranked Muskegon Community College (MCC) Jayhawks Men's Wrestling team hosted and competed in the annual Ben McMullen Open this weekend, using the home tournament as an early test of their season-opening talent and depth. The Jayhawks showcased a strong team performance, crowning two individual champions and producing four runner-up finishes in the highly competitive field.
The champions for the Jayhawks were Freshman Collin Kuhn, wrestling unattached, who dominated the 133-pound weight class, and Sophomore Kyron Zoet, who secured the 149-pound title. Zoet, who entered the season ranked 8th nationally, was unstoppable, scoring bonus points in each of his victories on the day. Kuhn's championship run concluded with a dramatic, all-Jayhawk final against his talented teammate, Anthony Cage, who finished as the runner-up at 133 pounds.
National attention remained focused on All-American Jack Guerrero, the nation's number one ranked wrestler at 125 pounds. Guerrero advanced to the finals but ultimately finished as the runner-up after dropping a heartbreaking decision.
The results demonstrated MCC's outstanding depth across the lighter and heavier classes:
-
Runner-Up Finishes: In addition to Cage, Zephyr Fegley (unattached) secured a second-place finish at 165 pounds, and Ian Barynas closed out the day as the runner-up at 285 pounds with a strong 3-1 performance.
-
Podium Placers: The team saw multiple athletes earn top-four placements, including Ian Cook (unattached), who rallied to finish 3rd at 149 pounds with an impressive 5-1 record. Fourth-place finishes were earned by Jimmy Thommen (125 lbs), Payton Paguada (133 lbs) with three falls, Carson Gorton(unattached) (141 lbs), who notched a pin and a technical fall, and Darnell Mack (157 lbs), who went 4-2 on the day.
-
Others Winning Matches: Showing the program's competitive grit, several non-placers recorded impressive wins, including Phillip Tyler-Stone at 125 pounds who scored a fall over Jayden Barnes of Olivet College, and Aiden Weiler who secured a victory by fall at 174 pounds.
"Hosting the Ben McMullen Open is always a great way to start the season, allowing us to get every wrestler mat time early on," said Head Coach Cody Carpenter. "We saw great things—Collin and Kyron both looked fantastic taking home titles, and the all-MCC final at 133 was exciting. While Jack dropping the final at 125 was tough, he showed competitive character, and we know he'll bounce back. The key takeaway is the depth; with all the guys getting wins, we know we have the talent to push toward March."
The Jayhawks will continue their early-season schedule as they prepare for MCCAA Duals next weekend.
